Information and communications technology plays a crucial role in shaping the dynamics of modern society. ICT has influenced the way we disseminate information, conduct business, deliver services, and interact with government agencies. Along with its impact on everyday activities, ICT contributes to socioeconomic development, which leads to higher quality of life and improved standards of living.
ICT proves to be one of the major engines for growth in various industries and the on-going COVID19 pandemic further emphasized the importance of digitalisation. As of January 2021, the total number of internet users in the Philippines aggregated to 74 million. The preliminary months of the pandemic resulted in an increase of 6.1% or a total of 4.2 million users nationwide. Despite this, internet penetration remains at 67%, signifying that more than a third of the country does not have access to internet services.
In addition to the aforementioned issue, ICT still has limitations along with other advanced technologies. Several of the identified drawbacks of ICT include misleading and prejudiced information, limited accessibility, and infrastructure limitations. With that, there is a need to take precautions in order to ensure the proper use of information and communication technology. Policies and initiatives that would address digital infrastructure gaps and strengthen the internet landscape are imperative in securing an equitable and sustainable digital transformation.
In line with this, the European Chamber of Commerce of the Philippines will be hosting "Leveraging ICT: Blueprint to Develop Business Growth and Opportunities" on 31 May 2022 and 02:00 PM - 03:30 PM (GMT +8), via Zoom. This conference will bring together experts from technology companies and agencies from the public and private sectors to further address and maximize the previously mentioned topics.
