Voters endorsed the agenda of President Aquino, as his coalition won a majority in the 24-member Senate, on top of its control in the House of Representatives. This will encourage the Administration to move forward with its reform agenda. The business sector is compiling a list of priority legislation for the 16th Congress which would support inclusive growth and create a level playing field.
To provide members and friends with insights into the political and economic repercussions of the mid-term elections, we have invited two resource persons to give us their readings and get involved in a debate with the audience:
Re-elected Governor Joey Salceda, Albay
The Green Economist Governor and Father of the Albay and Manila Declarations on Disaster Risk Reduction (DRR) and Climate Change, Jose Clemente Sarte "Joey" Salceda is the current governor of Albay, Bicol. Prior to his gubernatorial position, he served as representative of Albay’s third district for 9 years before being appointed by president Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo as her new Presidential Chief of Staff on 10 February 2007.
Salceda is a known economic and business analyst. Prior to his political career, Joey worked as the research director of SBC Warburg, a division of the Swiss Bank Corporation. While working for SBC, he was given the distinction of being among the top 5 analysts in 1996 survey. Aside from his stint with SBC, Salceda served as research director of Barings Securities, Phils, where he helped the research team garner top awards in fund management.
In 1995, he won Asiamoney’s Annual survey as "Best Analyst". He was also voted "Best Economist" for four consecutive years from 1993-1996.
Francisco Liboro
Francisco Liboro is the president of the Association of Securities Analysts of the Philippines (ASAP) and PCCI Securities.
ASAP is the first and only organization of securities analysts in the country. The organization seeks to promote the interest of the general and investing public through its primary goal of encouraging and assisting in the development and advancement of securities analysts in the Philippines. It was incorporated in 1996.
PCCI Securities is a fully-owned subsidiary of Philippine Commercial Capital Inc., one of the leading investment houses in the country. It was originally organized in 1983 as a dealer in commercial papers. PCCI does equities trading, online trading, money market placements, loan arrangement and syndication, financial consultancy, and trust & investment management services.
Columnist Solita Collas-Monsod (invited)
Popularly known as Mareng Winnie, is a Filipino broadcaster, host, economist, and writer. She had been the 5th Director-General of the National Economic and Development Authority and concurrently socio-economic planning secretary of the Philippines from 1986 to 1989.
Educated at the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania, she holds the rank of Professor Emeritus at the University of the Philippines School of Economics.
